Karl Griesbaum (German, 1872–1941), singing bird in cage automaton with brass cylindrical domed bird cage with circular hoop at top for hanging, also raised on three feet for displaying on table or in case. Yellow and black feathered bird perched on brass T form stand with deep red to purple velvet interior, bird in working condition with twisting head and articulating beak and tail feathers. Key to activate movement on underside by maker's mark and "MADE IN GERMANY", switch on side under banded decoration with beading and florals to turn on and off. Overall approximate height 11.5", diameter 6.5".
Overall in very good condition. Automaton in working condition with articulating head and tail achieving motion and musical chirping initiated upon turning key to underside. "On/off" switch in working order. Some losses to gilt work on brass body commensurate with age. Minor separation to velvet liner beneath bird along seam, and one screw supporting bird perch is loose. Bird with minor losses and discoloration to feathers, but both eyes and feet still apparently original and present. One of the three feet to underside of structure has been replaced, but is well matched and fitted with no apparent unsteadiness to structure.
