Continental, likely Italian, late 18th century. "Young John the Baptist in the Wilderness", oil on canvas, unsigned, verso of stretcher with stenciled black numbers. Ecclesiastic painting depicting a standing young John the Baptist turning edge of rocks opening up to a wooded valley standing barefoot in traditional belted animal pelt tunic with red cloth over shoulder, holding thin reed and pointing (symbolizing the path to Christianity, showing the way to salvation), right with view of idyllic valley with mountain top encircled by clouds above waterfall. Framed approximately 60.5" x 50.5". Unframed approximately 57.4" x 47.5".
Painting is re-lined and paint surface is stable. Overall with even craquelure throughout. Under black light examination, scattered in-painting detected throughout. Specifically, in-painting detected at edges of picture plane and on figure's left leg, ankle and hair. No apparent punctures, tears or untreated losses.
