John Thomas Riddle Jr. (American (active Georgia), 1934-2002), "The Umbrella"-1987, serigraph on paper hinged to board, artist's proof noted, titled, dated and signed in lower margin "AP/13 "THE UMBRELLA" John T Riddle Jr 1987". Figural print depicting an apparent beach scene with five figures, three male and two female, encircling a large and elaborate umbrella as one figure pulls a sixth figure up from the waves below. Framed approximately 38.75" x 31.5". Sheet size approximately 30" x 22.25". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Calvin Wayne McLarin, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Riddle's work has been exhibited at the High Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, both in Atlanta, Georgia; the Tubman African American Museum in Macon, Georgia; the National Jazz Museum in New York City, New York; and the Musée de Montreux in Switzerland. Riddle's work is also in the private collections of Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Maynard Jackson, Cicely Tyson, Sidney Poitier, Roberta Flack and Jasmine Guy.
Work is hinged to board with three strips of hinging tape at top. Left and right sides of sheet with deckled edges. Faint mat line from previous matting visible at upper margin. Small untreated tear to upper center margin spanning approximately .25". Upper right margin with applied purple label "W.A. Grant A. Green C. Green". Lower right quadrant with two extremely minor treated surface losses (to chartreuse area), visible under black light, not distracting under standard lighting. Lower right quadrant with two specks of discoloration. Lower right corner margin with circular loss commensurate with having been hole punched. Lower left corner of printed surface with indication of pigment bleed, almost certainly original to piece. Lower margin with area of fluorescing discoloration spanning approximately 1". Lower edge with minor signs of handling wear to sheet. No other losses or damage apparent.
