- Lot Description
John Thomas Riddle Jr. (American (active Georgia), 1934-2002), "Perfect Planning", mixed media on paper laid down on wood board, apparently unsigned. Figural mixed media composition with collage elements depicting two central figures with hands gasping, each figure flanked by two additional figures, with starry sky background, with script in the lower left quadrant "PERFECT PLANNING". Framed approximately 34.75" x 24.75". Unframed approximately 33.25" x 23.25". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Dr. & Mrs. Calvin Wayne McLarin, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: Riddle's work has been exhibited at the High Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, both in Atlanta, Georgia; the Tubman African American Museum in Macon, Georgia; the National Jazz Museum in New York City, New York; and the Musée de Montreux in Switzerland. Riddle's work is also in the private collections of Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Maynard Jackson, Cicely Tyson, Sidney Poitier, Roberta Flack and Jasmine Guy.
Condition
Overall with minor scattered surface abrasions not uncommon with mixed media. Abrasions are most predominant in upper left quadrant; with three more prominent abrasions to lower right, upper right and upper left corner margins. With adhesive residue to upper left quadrant, likely original to piece, visible only under black light. With single minor treated loss to lower left quadrant, visible under black light examination, not distracting with normal light. Curling to applied collage elements, not overwhelming; commensurate with material and age. Indistinct graphite inscriptions to lower right corner on recto and verso. No other losses or damage apparent.
