- Lot Description
John Marin (American, 1870-1953). "Downtown, The El" - 1921, drypoint etching on wove paper, edition of 30 published by Alfred Steiglitz, signed and dated within matrix lower right, pencil signed lower left margin. Dynamist etching depicting an energetic and abstracted New York City scene with the platform for The El train running diagonally from bottom left to top right with the Woolworth building and city skyline rising up to background and pedestrians bustling around beneath the tracks. Verso of frame with Sotheby's barcoded label. Framed approximately 14.25" x 16.25". Sheet size approximately 11" x 14. Image size approximately 6.875" x 8.75". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia. Note: This work also known as "Park Row" and "Downtown New York" was first printed in an edition of 30 by Alfred Steiglitz in 1921 and then again in an edition of approximately 500 for "The New Republic" in 1924. The print included in this lot retains four deckled edges and measures 11" x 14", smaller than all known examples of the New Republic edition. It also lacks the Van Gelder watermark as present on most known New Republic editions. The first edition of 30 was printed on Whatman double elephant paper, the watermark not appearing on each print.
Condition
Crisp impression with bold line and color. Sheet retains four deckled edges with no apparent losses or pinholes. Light toning overall to sheet, heavier to edges. Light mat burn around matrix not interfering with image or signature. Sheet joined to back mat board with hinging tape at verso top left and right. Verso of sheet with three repairs to small tears on margin, not interfering with image or readily apparent from recto, and not visible as framed. Notations made in pencil to edges: recto with "P" to lower left, "Marin - Downtown... 47-??" to lower right, and verso with "APG 15747D.19".
