John Friedlinger (Hungarian, b.1890-), "Still Life with Fruit", oil on canvas, signed lower left. Detailed still life painting depicting a lush and opulent spread with central silver bowl containing applies, grapes, pears and other fruit on wooden tabletop covered with white draped cloth, plums and other fruit artfully positioned around sterling overlay glass chalice, gilt bronze tazza, figural tankard, tall bulbous vase and lidded decanter in an interior with draped curtain and view of painted wall panel with loose rendering of gargoyle and architecture. Framed approximately 37" x 45". Unframed approximately 31.5" x 39".
Painting has not been relined. Visible abrasion at left in reflection of fruit on table running approximately 2" with paint losses, small area to right with additional abrasion with losses. Under black light examination, in painting visible in upper left corners, areas on edge where frame likely rubbed on painted surface and lower right surrounding but not interfering with signature. Earlier greenish hue from varnish coat. Additional in-painting or retouches in drapes at right. No other signs of damage, loss or repair to painting.
