Jiang Tingxi, China/ Changshu, Jiangsu, 1669-1732. Qing Dynasty. Ink and watercolor on silk, inscribed lower left inside woven border with black calligraphic marks. Painting depicts a landscape setting with a large phoenix at center accompanied by a young phoenix at her side, surrounded by various birds including cranes at bottom and small white birds set in a large tree that overhangs the scene, with a setting sun upper right.. Approximate dimensions, framed 87.75" x 49", unframed 86.5" x 47.25". Note: Artist is also known by the courtesy name Youjun, as well as the pseudonyms Nansha, Qingtong Jushi, Qiujun, and XiGu. Jiang was an official painter and grand secretary to the imperial court and focused his painting particularly on birds and flowers. Provenance: From the Estate of George L. Williams (Washington socialite, friend of Kennedys & Eisenhowers)
