Jean Charlot (French/ American, 1898-1979). "First Steps", lithograph, pencil signed lower right margin. Stylized figural print depicting a Native American or Hispanic woman at center looming over an infant as he hangs suspending from a cloth while she swaddles him, the composition formed of layers of crossing and parallel lines. Accompanied with original sales receipt from Susan Tarman Antiques & Fine Art of Santa Fe, New Mexico dated 1/28/1995 and selling for $575, as well as copied pages from the artist's catalogue raisonne. Framed approximately 23" x 18.5". Image size approximately 14" x 9.875". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia.
Examined out of the frame. Sheet not laid down, affixed to back mat board with two pieces of hinging tape to top edge. Recto of sheet with light and even toning, minor mat burn, and scattered minimal foxing. Verso of sheet with even toning and light scattered foxing. Sheet with clean edges, possibly cut down. Minor rippling to sheet edges commensurate with general handling. No apparent tears, pin holes, or losses.
