Japanese lacquerware lidded scholar's writing box of rectangular form with rounded corners with exterior of lid decorated with phoenix bird below tree branch, interior of lid with peony and lotus flowers and scrolled foliates. Interior of storage box with recessed niche for rectangular ink stone with sloped well with gilt border below recessed oblong metal ink well. Writing box also accompanied with a small inkstone fragment with character marks, a brush with covered lid, a pointed metal tipped writing instrument and an etched metal mounted tool. Lacquerware box exhibits a number of lacquer techniques including heidatsu, hiramakie, nashiji and takamakie. Box measures approximately 9.7" x 8.5" x 1.5". Length of calligraphy brush (including lid) 8.3".
Overall very good condition. Scattered minute flea bites to interior rim from where lids sits. The lid has a chip to rim. The cap on the metal tipped writting instrument does not close all the way. There is a flake to the interior where rectangular ink stone sits (see image #4). There is oxidation to the ink well. There is a chip to the back of the small inkstone fragment.
