Japan Early 20th Century. Japanese carved hardwood arm chair, the curved back in the form of flowering peony and foliage over scaled entwined dragon tails continuing to arms terminating in horned dragon heads presenting pearls, the plank seat with carved characters serpentine form with conforming, pierced carved apron, rising front cabriole legs featuring winged dragons, the back cabriole legs carved with cloud scroll. Height 34", width 27"(arm to arm), seat depth 17.25", seat height 17". Provenance: Gold Eagle Tavern, Beaufort, South Carolina (1930 - 1961) later acquired by the private collection of Mr. Philip Young, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: The Gold Eagle dated from 1795 and its name derived from the profession of its original owner Henry William De Saussure, direction of the United States Mint, under whose directorship the first "gold eagle" dollar was minted. The Gold Eagle was purchased by Kate Gleason of the Gleason Gear Works in 1927 and opened as the Gold Eagle Tavern, a hotel and restaurant in 1930. The Gold Eagle Tavern was famous for its location, décor and restaurant which blended the best of Lowcountry seafood and Continental specialties. It closed in 1961 and was demolished in 1971. The hotel furnishings, stored in a warehouse on Lady's Island, SC, were purchased by Oscar Young of Beaufort, SC and were gifted to his son Philip Young of Atlanta, GA.
