James Lesesne Wells (American, 1903-1991). "Star Gazing" - 1939, woodcut on paper, titled lower left margin, numbered lower center margin, signed and dated lower right margin. Woodblock print by Atlanta born African American artist depicting two tribal figures silhouetted before an enormous sun at center and surrounded by bold blocks of black in suggestion of modern architecture, the female figure at left presenting an orb or round vessel to the male figure at right wearing ritual headdress. Framed approximately 24.5" x 19.5". Sheet size approximately 21.25" x 16.25". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia.
Item not examined out of the frame as the work is floating and we do not want to compromise the integrity of the work. All edges deckled and work does not appear to have been cut down. Light handling wear to all corners and edges. Scattered light creasing throughout. Scattered dirt or ink marks from light handling, particularly in lower left, lower center and lower right margins. Remnants of older hinging tape visible at sides through sheet. No signs of rips, tears, holes or foxing. Light even toning to sheet. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
