John Karl Hillers (German/ American, 1843-1925). "A General View of Zuni" - circa 1879-1881, Ambrotype, signed within plate lower right "HIL". This period enlargement from the glass negative depicts a wide angle view of a Zuni pueblo in New Mexico, with tribal architecture spreading along the horizon line and a rough hewn tree branch fence stretching out to the left and also forming a yard to the front right of architecture. A stone wall at center supports the hillside which the pueblo sits on, and a half-built stone building sets in the center foreground surrounded by a wall built from boulders and patchy grass. Inscribed within plate lower left "A General View of Zuni" and lower right "HIL". Overall approximately 32.25" x 38.5", image approximately 25.25" x 31". Note: Shot by Hillers, an American government photographer from 1871-1919, this photograph is a product of the first specifically anthropological expedition to the American Southwest, which brought Frank H. Cushing to the Zuni people of New Mexico where he became the first ever participant observer of the tribe. This photograph was enlarged from the original smaller glass negative that was carried along the journey to the Grand Canyon. These original, oversized Ambrotypes are exceedingly rare due to the age and delicate nature of the medium. Provenance: Acquired into the collection of Booker T. Washington likely at the Cotton States and International Exposition in 1895 in Atlanta, Georgia. Note on provenance: Copy of letter from Booker T. Washington's granddaughter, Robin Washington Banks, confirming provenance is available upon request. Letter states her inheritance of the estate and its ultimate sale to the consignor of this lot.
