English, possibly Irish, third quarter 18th century. An impressive George III mahogany library bookcase cabinet, in two sections, the upper section in breakfront form having an egg-and-dart molded and dentilated broken pediment above a similarly decorated conforming cornice over four glazed doors with highly carved octagonal mullions enclosing three adjustable shelves, the conforming lower case having a foliate carved border over four decoratively paneled cupboard doors raised on a foliate carved plinth base. Approximate height 119", width 76.5" (at crown), depth 24" (base).
Structurally sound. Finish refreshed. There is gapping at the corners/seams of the pediment. Many glass panes appear to be wavy with included small seed bubbles; some panes a later replacement. Right side glass door with sick glass in top panes. One seed bubble at surface giving appearance of a small bruise. Left side glass door with clouding in pane and one pane with crack above mullion. Some repairs with patches to hinges. Upper case with two holes in base to each section probably to secure to lower case. Scattered areas of restoration and repairs to interior as would be expected with age. Vertical shrinkage left side case. All cupboard doors at base with some vertical shrinkage and repairs, not distracting. Base interior ceiling with later pine and stain drips; also writing in pencil, illegible.
