Continental, probably French, circa 1810. Impressive Empire walnut semainier or seven drawer commode having a projecting pediment over a secret hidden frieze drawer and seven long drawers all having individual locking mechanisms (one missing) and the drawer pulls embossed with portrait of Marie Antoinette, the whole flanked by two free standing ormolu mounted turned tapered pilasters resting on block feet. The back with traces of transport sticker from A. Welti Furrer, Zurich. Approximate height 66.25", width 50.6", depth 23.3".
Structurally sound and in overall very good condition. Minor warping to the top with a couple of horizontal cracks and circular stain, possibly from moisture. Prior worming present; particularly inside the interior drawer face at base. Minor chipping to edges on drawers. Drawers lined with paper, not removed but probably to help with separation/shrinkage. Some blocks/runners replaced as would be expected with age and usage. One drawer was faux escutcheon, no locking mechanism. Key is present.
