John Vesey (American (Massachusetts) 1924-1992. circa 1968. Custom crafted and one of a kind dining table with 3" Caucasian burl circular extending top raised on four high polished aluminum downswept legs united by a circular stretcher. Table accommodates two additional leaves. Accompanied with original receipt "John Vesey, Inc. 969 Third Avenue, New York 10022, Murray Hill B-7766" dated February 14, 1969. Approximate height 29.25", diameter of top 42". Width with leaves 72". Note: Vesey gained popularity as a furniture designer during the 1950s and 1960s for taking traditional furniture forms and translating them into metal, typically aluminum and stainless steel, often with accents of polished brass and wood. His list of celebrity clients included such names as Hubert de Givenchy, Leo Castelli, Howard Hughes, Count Rudi Crespi, Andy Warhol’s muse Jane Holzer, Vidal Sassoon, Diana Ross, and Bobby Kennedy. The dining table featured in this lot exemplifies Vesey's translation of form and combination of natural and industrial materials.
Structurally sound. Top appears to have been polished, while the leaves have not. Minor scratches to top, however, not overly distracting. Minor wear to vulnerable edges, commensurate with age & usage. Evidence of veneer loss to leaves. One leaf with dark staining, possibly from moisture. Aluminum base with minimal oxidation and minor surface scratches, mainly to legs, also commensurate with age & usage.
