Lyonel Feininger (German/ American, 1871-1956). "Hafen (mit Schiffen und Mannern am Quai) [Harbor (With Ships, and Men on Wharf)] - c.1919, woodcut on oatmeal-tan carbon-copy paper, pencil signed lower left margin, pencil titled lower right margin in German. One of two known proofs for the apparently unpublished woodblock print, the other on Japanese laid paper. Expressionist print depicting several blocky figures standing on a wharf looking out upon water filled with boats bearing portholes and tall masts, the bank to opposite side of water with peaked roof structures, the composition filled with bold and striking vertical lines of the figure and object countered by short and choppy horizontal lines of the ocean and sky. Lower right of sheet with vertically oriented stamp reading "FEININGER ESTATE" over "G W No. 732", and below that a horizontal handwritten inscription "1950". Accompanied with copies of pertinent pages from "Lyonel Feininger: a Definitive Catalogue of His Graphic Work: Etchings, Lithographs, Woodcuts: Das Graphische Werk Radierungen, Lithographien, Holzschnitte" by Leonna E. Prasse, published 1972. Framed approximately 17" x 18". Sheet size approximately 8.625" (tapering) x 11.125". Image size approximately 5.625" x 6.625". (142mm x 168mm). Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia. Reference: Prasse 195.
Light wear to corners and edges from handling. Loss to paper in upper right corner visible. Light creasing to sheet (predominately two diagonal creases at lower left) not particularly visible due to texture of paper. Small loss to upper left corner. No signs of rips, tears, holes, foxing or water damage.
