Anton Brentano (German, 1840-1888). "Hungarian Gypsy Girl with Tambourine", oil on canvas, signed lower left. Large format portrait painting depicting a young gypsy beauty at knee length wearing a patterned scarf over her raven hair adorned with dangling gold coins, her tattered tan shirt ripped at front exposing the center of her chest down to her waist and tucked into a long red patterned skirt, also with a woven blanket wrapped around her shoulders and outstretched arm with open palm facing up, perhaps in the midst of begging, her right hand at her side holding a tambourine, the figure set before a stone wall adorned with a flowering vine creeping in on all sides with open doorway to right. Paper label to verso of stretcher with painting title, and a second paper label to verso of frame "Finishes by Malcolm Yarbrough". Framed approximately 54.75" x 40.5", unframed approximately 41.625" x 27".
Painting has not been relined. Oxidation visible on back of stretcher and verso of canvas. Work with 9 scattered small holes with paint losses (the majority in the lower left region of work). Scattered craquelure throughout with early signs of lifting--would recommend professional restoration to stabilize. Approximately five small paint losses throughout (in addition to holes). Light wear to edges of painting from rubbing on frame with earlier in-painting. Under black light examination, limited retouches (contained to edges with wear to rubbing), also with greenish hue from earlier varnish coat. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
