Hudson River School, School of Thomas Cole (American, 1801-1848, "Oxbow Landscape with Figures", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Beautiful 19th century landscape painting depicting a figure in foreground with brown cow with two white calves under leaved trees, blasted tree trunks from thunderstorm lower center, figure with dog in field on right, dramatic landscape with hills, valleys, river water and mountain in background, scattered figures within under cloudy blue sky. Work in carved and gilt wood shaped frame with acanthus leaf, beaded and incised bellflower decoration. Overall framed approximately 29.125" x 38.5". Unframed approximately 21" x 32". Note: This scene is likely a view of the oxbow formed by the Connecticut River near Northampton, Massachusetts. The sharp curve of the river and the surrounding landscape fit with established Hudson River School works of the location. Cole drew and painted many works from different angles of the oxbow throughout the late 1820s and 1830s. Fitting with Cole's imagery, this work also depicts blasted tree trunks at lower center, a trope he borrowed from the painter Salvador Rosa which appears regularly in the artist's paintings.

Please note, Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery sells items at a rate of approximately 80 to 100 lots per hour in a live auction setting. Since the auction moves quickly, online bidding platforms are,at times, unable to keep up with the pace. To avoid potential disappointment when bidding on an online platform, consider placing a realistic absentee bid in advance of the sale. Priority, in regards to bidding, goes to in-house floor bidders. Occasionally, the auctioneer may reject a live online bid and/or reopen a lot after the close of online bidding (typically due to a missed in-house floor bid). Due to this possibility, at times the online bidding platform will show an online bidder as the winning bid when they are not. All final winning bidders will be notified via invoicing from Ahlers & Ogletree typically by the Monday immediately following the sale. To bid with Ahlers & Ogletree as a phone or absentee bidder, please feel free to email us at bid@AandOAuctions.com.
