- Lot Description
Friedrich Hofelder (Polish, 19th century), "Untitled (Portrait of a Girl with Lamp)"-circa 1873, oil on canvas, signed to lower right "F. Hofelder". Portrait of a fair-skinned maiden in Romanesque draped attire, having chestnut hair concealed by guarnello or thin veil--a possible reference to the Virgin Mary who is traditionally shown wearing this garment--with Roman style oil lamp in hand. Framed approximately 54.75" x 47.25". Unframed approximately 37.75" x 30.25".
Condition
Canvas is loose and needs to be tightened. Craquelure overall. Scattered areas of repair and inpainting overall, including lower left, lower center, upper right, and upper center, with repaired tear to neck. Stretcher creasing. Revarnished. Some soiling. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
