- Lot Description
Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858), "Rough Sea at Naruto in Awa Province (Naruto Whirlpools)"-circa 1855, as no. 55 from the series "Pictures of Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces", color woodblock, published by Koshimuraya Heisuke (Koshihei), marks upper right margin. Nishiki-e work depicting a tumultuous ocean with whirlpool and dynamic white sea foam on jagged rocks, view of Japanese mainland in background with birds flying overhead. Unframed sheet size approximately 14.25" x 9.3".
Condition
We believe this work to be of the period and not a later reprinting. Toning to sheet throughout. Discoloration to edges. Mounted to board at top edge. Sheet has been cut down on all sides. Wear to corners and edges from handling. Foxing throughout sheet most visible in sky and from back of work. Five small pinhole losses on left margin, one additional pinhole loss at lower right in water.
