Attributed to Henry Martin Pope (British, 1843-1908). "Resting Travelers", oil on canvas, possibly signed "HP" lower right within green plant. Painting depicts groups of travelers on a dirt road by a tall ridge, a pair of them being a seated male and a standing female with a white dog, another being a single man gathering hay to feed his white horse at center with black and white dog beside, and another a pair of people, one on horseback, further down the path headed toward a group of cows and a mountain in the distance. Looming purple clouded skies are above and lush trees line the edge of the ridge on right. Framed approximately 15" x 17", unframed approximately 12" x 14".
Examined under black light. Painting has been relined. Oxidation to stretcher commensurate with age. Craqulure to paint surface commensurate with age, many cracks exhibiting in painting. Rectangular band of craqulure consistent with inner edge of stretcher. One c-shaped repair with in painting to sky at right of tree at upper center, approximately 1" wide. One L-shaped repair with inpainting on back of man and ground below him, approximately 1.5" wide. Narrow band of dirt or residue along top edge. Painting would benefit from professional cleaning. Paint layer stable. No other apparent losses, tears, rips, punctures, or abrasions.
