Hans Erni (Swiss, 1909-2015), "Les Bucoliques De Virgile" portfolio of 25 sanguine etchings on BFK Rives wove paper - 1960, limited edition 4/20, published by Andre and Pierre Gonin (Lausanne) and Jean Graven, each sheet pencil numbered lower left margin, pencil signed lower right margin, back fold sheet inscribed by the artist beside line drawing of a bull. Complete portfolio of 25 etchings with clamshell case, colophon, and backing fold. Each etching on a full sheet with four deckled edges and depicting in simple line form a scene from Latin poet Virgil's (Publius Vergilius Maro, 70BC-19AD) poetry dating to 37 BC. Back fold sheet with French language description of the folio and its production. Each sheet approximately 22.125" x 16". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia. Reference: Giroud 27, Monod 11332.
Each etching on sheet with four deckled edges exhibiting minor rippling to edges commensurate with limited handling. Works apparently stored within clamshell with topmost work exhibiting even toning overall and the underlying stack of works exhibiting markedly less toning. Works likely never framed or otherwise mounted. Colophon with toning and rippling, vertical tears along seams to binding edge, and the back sheet verso with the halo/remnant of an owl created by the storage of a woodblock print within the clamshell case (this halo also present to interior back of clamshell). Clamshell with apparent water staining, discoloration, and toning, but structurally sound with apparently original tie to side.
