- Lot Description
Peru, early 20th century. A collection of three Peruvian Shipibo pottery vessels, comprising of two similar but unmatched small low bowls of buff colored clay with buff colored slip and hand painted decoration in red and black of geometric patterning to interior and exterior; and a small jug or vase of red clay with red slip and with hand painted black and buff colored decoration in an elaborate geometric pattern. All unmarked. Low bowl approximately 1.375" tall, 4.875" diameter; second low bowl approximately 1.5" tall, 4.5" diameter, jug approximately 5" tall, 4.5" diameter. Note: The Shipibo-Conibo are an indigenous people along the Ucayali River in the Amazon rainforest in Perú. Formerly two groups, the Shipibo (apemen) and the Conibo (fishmen), they eventually became one distinct tribe through intermarriage and communal ritual and are currently known as the Shipibo-Conibo people.
