English, first quarter 19th century. A group of two Staffordshire pearlware bocage figural groups, both having occupational themes, one entitled ‘Bird Catcher’ modeled as a couple sitting on rocks beside a stream, holding a dove before a cage with a ewe at their feet, named below on a square base and resting (not affixed) on a wood painted base; the other entitled ‘Shepherds’ modeled as a shepherd and shepherdess seated on a naturalistically molded ground including a dog, a lamb, and a goat named below on a square base and mounted on a wood painted base. Both after figural groups by Ralph Wood, one of the earliest Staffordshire figure potters active1782 - 1795. Both groups are the multi-colored versions, decorated in the round. The one group not affixed to base has a vent hole to the underside. Both with retailer stickers for F. Moog, Atlanta. Approximate height of Bird Catcher 13.5”, base width 6’, base depth 6.5”. Approximate height of Shepherds 13.75”, base width 6.25”, base depth 6.25”.
Wear to each with abrasions on corners and edges of base, each with additional losses to enamel on edges of items such as shoes, hats, dresses--more significant losses to top of hat. Scattered cracquelure to glazing throughout form. Losses to each including objects in figures hands on "Shepherds" and grass on "Bird Catcher". "Shepherds" with in-painting surrounding restoration on backs of figures, including two significant breaks with restoration (visible at back without black light). No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
