Circle of Simon & Halbig (German, 1839-1932), circa late 19th century. A hand cranked musical automaton with three figural bisque-head musicians arranged surrounding a music stand, one cellist, one percussionist, and one lutist, each with head that moves side to side and right arm playing instrument, and with charming period clothing and hat, the figures to a rectangular footed box with crank to right side and lined to each side and top with floral silk textile. Unmarked. Approximate height 14", width 15.5", depth 9.25". Provenance: From the Estate of Mary L. Haugk, Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Hand crank functions but musical mechanisms slightly lagging in tempo. Each musician figure has all parts intact and in good aesthetic condition, some small losses to the wooden hands. Faces remain in good condition with no nicks, indentations, or scratches. All original articles of clothing remain intact with some minor spots and stains commensurate with age. All instruments remain fully intact. Gold leather border of "stage" portion of base with light fraying with scattered embossed tips missing, not particularly distracting. Embossed leather surface of "stage" darkened in color commensurate with age and external conditions. Silk fabric textile surrounding base almost fully intact except the worn circle surrounding the crank on the side of the box which reveals the wood. Fabric at front frieze of box faded likely due to mild sun exposure. Front left foot has slightly chipped black paint, third foot at back right side is missing, but in spite of this piece remains structurally sound and does not wobble.
