- Lot Description
George (Smith) Armfield (British, 1808-1893), "Resting Pets"-1871, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Charming animal painting depicting resting pets in an interior with cats and dogs nestled closely to one another on a green bench or trunk with red blanket draped off edge, larger dog in foreground resting on floor. Framed approximately 16.25" x 20". Unframed approximately 9.25" x 13".
Condition
Craquelure or alligatoring throughout however paint layer appears to be stable. Patch on back from earlier tear retouches to area visible under blacklight examination in between cat and dogs on green blanket. Some additional smaller retouches visible under blacklight including to chain. Green varnish layer visible under blacklight. Some losses to frame (top center crest and right side) and wear to gilt commensurate with age.
