Gerhard H. Welcher (Swedish (Eskilstuna), active late 18th and early 19th century, circa 1790. A charming Swedish Gustavian (1772-1809) tall case or longcase clock in the traditional Swedish Mora comtoise form painted beige surmounted by an urn finial carved in the round over the circular glass dial door displaying the painted clock face with Arabic numerals and patinated dial signed G.H.Welcher/ Eskilstuna/No. 1479, the outward curving waist section with hinged door comprising a circular display window, over a curved waist molding, the paneled base section decorated with a carved diaper pattern and scalloped skirt, resting on French front feet and platform back support. Approximate height 86", width 18", depth 7.25". Provenance: Property from the Private Collection of Helen Ballard, Atlanta, Georgia.
Clock is currently not in working order. Clock is in physically good condition with overall distressed finish. Upper finial and decorative carved elements intact. Clock face exhibits all painted elements intact including numbers, name of maker, city, and issue number. Minor light splits above and below window of clock door commensurate with age and environmental conditions. Original back feet are missing & board has been added for support. Right outer edge of back foot painted aquamarine. Interior and back unpainted.
