French, second half of 20th century. A red, black, and gilt occasional table in the Baroque style, the top painted in shades of deep red and white to resemble rosso levanto marble, terminating in coved red-painted molding surmounting an apron with pierced and carved Baroque decoration central carved shell and foliate and c-scroll carved openwork and black and gold floral carved drops, the joined blocks at corners decorated with gilt sunbursts within red painted cove-molded cartouches trimmed in black, all raised on four barley twist turned legs terminating from black red and gilt ring turned capitals, joined by a conforming barley twist turned stretcher. Approximate height 30.5", width 30.5", depth 19.5".
Scattered paint and gilt losses throughout with later scattered in-painting or retouches, particularly to corners and edges. Removable rectangular top with later faux painting, top with two wood splits and slightly raised circular wood fill at center, scattered small holes visible on underside of board--possibly from worming but likely faux applied. Minor separation at joints (structurally stable) commensurate with age. Interior of block on base above barley twist leg with wood decay likely from worming, not visible unless looking under table or without top. Replaced side rail under rectangular top. Wood losses to two feet at bottom resulting in less finished appearance. A few scattered small wood losses on legs and stretcher predominately on barley twist elements including small gnawed spot on cross stretcher. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
