- Lot Description
French, late 19th to early 20th century. A mahogany and cherry veneered cabinet finished to a high shine with Japanese style decoration from the Belle Epoque era (circa 1873-1914), comprising three breakfront doors and surmounted by a conforming molded cornice, with patinated gilt classical mounts, each side door revealing the striking flame mahogany grain framed by gilt metal stringing with foliate c-scrolls at corners and central inlaid cherry veneered ovals with striking grain, opening to storage space with panels for shelving, the central door decorated with a large painted enamel Japanese-inspired scene in shades of black, green, beige, mauve, taupe, and aquamarine depicting geishas standing within and in the courtyard in front of the terrace of a traditional Japanese building along with musicians, scholars, and gentlemen in fantastical Western interpretations of Asian dress, framed by conforming patinated metal banding, surmounting a lower panel inlaid with striking cherry veneer, the side panels raised on bracket feet with gilt paterae at sides. Approximate height 67.75", width 68.25", depth 18".
Condition
Cabinet in overall good condition with all brasses and inlay intact. Lacquer exhibits cracquelure to lacquer throughout. Slight weathering to veneers at door commensurate with age. Interior displays brackets in walls but no shelves.
