- Lot Description
Frederick Stone Batcheller (American (Rhode Island), 1837-1889), "New England River Landscape"-1882, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Well rendered landscape painting depicting a view of a serpentine river and forested banks with still placid water under overcast cloudy sky as rainstorm approaches. Framed approximately 28.5" x 40.5". Unframed approximately 24.25" x 36". Note: Frederick Stone Batcheller was active with the Providence art community and worked with noted artists Marcus Waterman and James Morgan Lewin,as a member of "The Group of 1855". He began his career working as a marble cutter and sculptor in Providence, Rhode Island for Tingley Brothers stone yard. He later turned his attention to painting still life and landscape paintings for which he is most highly regarded. In 1880, Batcheller and other artists founded the Providence Art Club in order to further the Rhode Island art movement and connect artists with other artists and reach out to new and enthusiastic seasoned collectors. This work displays Batcheller's keen and skilled attention to detail, texture and weight typically found in his still life paintings while capturing a fleeting moment in the New England landscape--the calm before the storm.
Condition
Painting has been relined. Small patch visible on back. Under black light examination, L shaped tear with in-painting visible on opposite side of patch, as well as scattered minor retouches on edge of canvas from rubbing on frame, and a few scattered small dots on areas throughout. Craquelure commensurate with age, however paint layer stable without signs of lifting. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
