Wimberlys serving in the 6th Regiment, Georgia Infantry and both from Twiggs county, Georgia: Frederick D. Wimberly enlisted May 27, 1861 as a Second Lieutenant, promoted First Lieutenant June 10, 1862, Captain July 1, 1862, and killed at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862; Fred D. Wimberly (American, 1840-1893) enlisted as a Private June 15. 1861, promoted to Captain after the Battle of Sharpsburg where he was wounded, and resigned his commission serving out the remainder of the Civil War as a Quartermaster Sergeant in Macon, Georgia, though the 6th Georgia carried his name on their rolls as a Commissary Sergeant as a mark of respect.
