- Lot Description
Large framed American Civil War archive containing reproduction letters pertaining to the medical discharge of Confederate States of America soldier Captain Frederick Davis Wimberly, 6th Regiment, Georgia Infantry (American, 1840-1893), along with two additional documents, a letter dated November 30, 1862 accepting his resignation, and an ink sketch noting "Eli From Walton Taber, 1866", titled "Confederate Wounded From Sharpsburg". Loose Certificate of Authenticity for The Lenneth R. Laurence Galleries is in a pocket to the verso. Note: There were two Frederick (Fred) D. Wimberlys serving in the 6th Regiment, Georgia Infantry and both from Twiggs county, Georgia: Frederick D. Wimberly enlisted May 27, 1861 as a Second Lieutenant, promoted First Lieutenant June 10, 1862, Captain July 1, 1862, and killed at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862; Fred D. Wimberly (American, 1840-1893) enlisted as a Private June 15. 1861, promoted to Captain after the Battle of Sharpsburg where he was wounded, and resigned his commission serving out the remainder of the Civil War as a Quartermaster Sergeant in Macon, Georgia, though the 6th Georgia carried his name on their rolls as a Commissary Sergeant as a mark of respect.Toning, tears, stains, and fold marks to letter; some historical paper artifacts have been laid to foam board; visible scratches to acrylic glass, lower left corner; not examined out of frame.
