Continental School, Late 19th/Early 20th century. "The Fortune Teller", oil on canvas, illegibly signed lower right, possibly F. Gort or F. Yort? Figural painting depicting three young women in white bonnets and white long sleeve blouses with pink shoulder wraps at a round table in a dark rustic interior facing an older woman with white hat and red cloak seated in ladderback chair topped with perched black raven. Woman holding playing cards in hand and with arched spread of cards in front of her, presumably reading the young lady's fortune. Framed approximately 25.5" x 32". Unframed approximately 20" x 27".
Painting has been relined. Craquelure throughout, lower left of table below figures with some light lifting. Under black light, green varnish coat apparent. Scattered in-painting to earlier losses, retouches also visible on horizontal tear in lower center area. Two areas of discoloration--possibly with different finish in lower left, visible in raking light. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
