British School, first half 19th century. "Portrait of Beauty with Flower Garland", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. A monumental and very fine portrait painting depicting a young brunette lady at knee length seated wearing a luscious mint green silk dress and holding a flower garland or wreath in her hands with one elbow propped upon a stone pedestal over which can be seen a garden or landscape with trees under a blue sky, the figure with very pale porcelain skin and long dark hair tied back and lying forward over her shoulder with a coy and subtly smiling expression to her face as she peers out at viewer. Painting to a hand carved wood Chippendale style frame. Framed approximately 64.75" x 46.5", unframed approximately 49.75" x 40.25".
Overall with craquelure commensurate with age. Under black light examination, hazy green tone to paint surface consistent with older varnish layer. Painting with a few areas of minor inpainting to forehead, left cheek, decolletage, and right forearm, apparently in repair of paint loss, background also with scattered and minor areas of in painting - none of these areas being distracting or readily apparent to the naked eye. Lower left corner also with area of minor in painting and with two repaired vertical tears, one 1" and one 1.5" long. Upper right of painting with one horizontal repaired tear or compression, approximately 1". Visible rectangular area of craquelure likely consistent with interior perimeter of older stretcher structure - not distracting. Painting has been laid down and exhibits minor rippling to corners and right side. Back of painting with one patch to top at left of center, evidence of water presence to center of canvas (not apparent on paint layer), also with a few very minor patches to verso. Frame in overall good condition with minor separation to corner joints and wood flaking, mainly to protruding leaf tips.
