- Lot Description
James Butler (Bolton, Lancashire), second half 18th century. A fine George III tall or longcase mahogany clock having a double scroll pediment with carved rosettes centered by turned finial over glazed square door enclosing the conforming white enamel dial having Roman numeral chapter ring and Arabic five minutes to outer track, with pierced steel hands, subsidiary seconds and calendar dials within floral painted spandrels, on a long case headed by cavetto molding over a frieze with a central ovular inlaid shell marquetry, the trunk with arched door surmounted with applied acorn, all raised on a plinth base decorated to the front with scrolling stringing and inlaid six petal flower, the sides with chamfered lamb's tongue. Approximate height 86", width 22.75", depth 10.25". Note: Interior of trunk door with remnants of paper label "Dealer in American, English, German CLOCKS, NO. 3, Top of Spring Gardens, NEAR TO ASHBURNER ST, BOLTON, Clocks and Watches cleaned and Repaired in the best manner on the lowest terms. HENRY LEE, pledges himself to supply the best 24 hours German Clocks for Twelve Shillings each, being precisely the same article, from the same warehouse that hawkers sell to the public for Twenty-five Shillings each; and as he permanently resides here, the Inhabitants of Bolton will see the advantage of purchasing from him in preference to a stranger."
