American School, 19th century. "Farm Boy at Barn Door", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned, with label to verso "Young Farm Boy at the Barn Door 19th C American School circa 1890 original frame from a Missouri family.". Figural painting depicting young farmer--bearing some semblance to Tom Sawyer--dressed in hat, overalls and work boots, holds a metal pale as he leans on an open red barn door, farm equipment including a plow can be seen in the obscured interior of the barn. Framed approximately 12.125" x 10.125". Unframed approximately 8" x 6". Provenance: Property of the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia, purchased from John and Vicki Hanson Art & Antiques in November of 2000. Overall good condition. Painting is not re-lined. Paint surface stable, with no signs of flaking or lifting. Area of craquelure visible at center of picture plane, commensurate with impact; verso with adhesive treatment to stabilize. Under black light examination extremely minor in-painting detected to barn door and barn interior. No other signs of repair or loss detected.
