“The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet", hand colored mezzotint by Alexander Hay Ritchie (Scottish, 1822-1895) after the painting by Francis Bicknell Carpenter (American, 1830-1900). Figural print depicts a reenactment of Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation on July 22, 1862, with (from left to right) Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury, President Lincoln, Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, Caleb B. Smith, Secretary of the Interior, William H. Seward, Secretary of State, Montgomery Blair, Postmaster General, and Edward Bates, Attorney General, with wall portraits of Simon Cameron and Andrew Jackson. Inscribed in lower margin (from left to right) “Edwin M. Stanton, Salmon P. Chase, President Lincoln, Gideon Welles, Caleb B. Smith, William H. Mat burn to margins, more noticeable at right and left. Sheet hinged to board. Sheet trimmed such that inscription is obscured. Top margin with scattered tears, creases and losses; longest tear at right spanning approximately 2”; largest loss at right corner spanning approximately 1”. Upper left margin with loss spanning approximately 0.75”. Scattered creases to picture plane; most noticeable crease at lower left, running horizontally spanning approximately 11.25”. Lower left corner with two repaired tears that have been treated to verso with paper tape. Lower right corner with scattered discolorations.
