English, early 19th century. Framed oval silk embroidery with watercolor on paper elements depicting the Old Testament Biblical story of The Finding of Moses or Moses in the Bulrushes with Nile River in foreground, young woman kneeling beside empty woven basket, and group of three women (including the Pharaoh's daughter and Moses' sister Miriam) surrounding nude baby Moses with extended arms upward. Framed approximately 21.5" x 18.25". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
Examined out of the frame. Textile cut down and tacked in places to a later white paper board. Paper elements (faces, hands, feet) lifting and/or curling at edges, with some adhesive residue leached on to backing silk. Silk thinning and/or splitting in four notable places to sky and ground. Some water intrusion along lower edge - not distracting.
