- Lot Description
English, late 19th/ early 20th century. A polychromed cast iron "Jolly Nigger" mechanical bank depicting a caricaturIzed black man at bust length with truncated proper left arm and right arm bent at elbow with open palm for coin, with fixed ears, orange pupil eyes open mouth for receiving coin between white teeth, the figure wearing red shirt with red collar and cuffs and black bow tie. Marked in the cast to back "JOLLY NIGGER BANK" within a u-shaped cartouche. Underside grate with round apertures marked in the cast "MADE IN ENGLAND". Approximate height 6.125", width 5", depth 5.75".
Condition
Overall good original condition with some paint loss and pitting as would be expected with age and usage. Some cracking to eyes. Bank is in working condition.
