Josh Gosfield (American (New York), 20th century). "Elmore James, King of Slide", mixed media assemblage, signed lower right of guitar. Large folk art assemblage as homage to Mississippi blues musician Elmore James (American, 1918-1963), the composition featuring an acoustic guitar at center painted to body with a likeness of the musician's face flanked by "ELMORE" and "JAMES" painted in yellow, the guitar mounted to a sheet of corrugated steel roofing also mounted with planks of wood with paint flaking off, a straw broom, a picture frame suspending a metal tube at opening, and a black painted wood plank inscribed "King of the Slide Guitar" beside a melted vinyl record inscribed "The Fire/Fury/Enjoy Recordings", the whole encased in a deep plexiglas shadowbox. Accompanied with a copy of the entry form for the piece into a juried exhibition, the piece entered by Valerie Herzberg of Warner Brothers Records. This piece of art was used as the cover for a multiple cd release of James' recordings under the Capricorn Records label in 1992.
