English, early 20th century. An Edwardian satinwood and mahogany carlton house desk, having a U-shaped form, the sliding writing surface inset with gilt and tooled leather, fitted with upper storage, including a central, locking compartment flanked on either side by three small drawers, the corners with locking storage compartments with upper letter slots, with two serpentine side compartments with hinged lids, opening to reveal interior document storage, over a conforming apron with a bow-fronted central drawer and two small side drawers, on squared, tapering legs. Decorated in all-over neoclassical Adamesque motifs, including a foliated roundel with a putto, swags of roses, laurel wreaths, acanthus scrolls, and bellflower drops. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 40.25”, width 41.75”, depth (closed) 22.25”, depth (open) 27.5”. Provenance: From the Estate of a prominent publisher and philanthropist, Greenwich, CT.
Wear commensurate with age and use. Veneer is dry in some areas, and appears to have been refinished to side letter storage compartments. missing one drawer pull and keys. Some compartments have not been opened. Area of abrasion to front. Some losses to veneer on back edging with some replacements. Some craquelure to floral decoration. Some small chips and dents, and areas where veneer is lifting. Some minor sun fading to legs. Legs are solid and sturdy. Some minor scuffing to leather. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
