Edmund John Niemann (British, 1813-1976), "View of Glenarm Castle"-1854, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left "NIEMANN 54". Landscape painting depicting an elevated view of Glenarm Castle in Northern Ireland depicting historic walled gardens and view of the ocean dotted with small sailboats. Landscape with lush green trees, plants and grass under cloudy sky. Verso of canvas with "Glenarm Antrim" for location, also with stenciled canvas mark reading "Prepared By Charles Roberson 51 Long Acre. London". Back of stretcher with vintage affixed label with typed artist's name. Framed approximately 21.75" x 25.75". Unframed approximately 14.25" x 18.125".
Painting has not been relined. Oxidation to verso of canvas and stretcher commensurate with age. Lower verso of canvas with older repair patch. Scattered craquelure throughout (larger and more noticeable in the sky section). One area with lifting at right adjacent to frame. Light wear to paint surface on edges from rubbing on frame. Under black light examination, section in sky to left of center with significant in-painting (possible cloud or flock of birds removed). Retouches on edges and scattered areas in sky. Additional in-painting at front left of castle structure on front side of patch--likely from tear or puncture. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
