Edward Moulthrop (American, 1916-2003). A fine and large turned figured tulipwood bowl or vessel with striking colors of deep brown splashed to light caramel. Incised signature on underside "MOULTHROP" under a branded "M" inside a square cartouche, and "'FIGURED TULIPWOOD". Approximate height 8.12", diameter of mouth 7.6", diameter at widest point 12.25". Provenance: From the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia. Note: the absence of the wood type's Latin name and the typical numerical coding is likely an indicator of this being an early piece by Moulthrop created before a system of numbering was instated.
Structurally sound. Interior of bowl with lifting and peeling of coated finish. Interior bowl base with stable tight fracture (see image #5). Exterior bowl with areas of lifting, peeling and losses to finish (see images #1, #4, #7).
