Spode (English, founded 1767), circa 1805-1807. A matched set of forty-nine pieces of bone china in the "878" pattern with iron red ground and gilding comprising a teapot with lid, double handled sugar bowl with lid, cream pitcher, waste bowl with underplate, coffee cup with saucer, twelve demitasse (three with raised handles), twelve tea cups, fourteen saucers and two larger saucers. Some marked "Spode 838" or just "838" in either red underglaze or gilt underglaze. Approximate height of tea pot 6.25", width 10.5" (spout to handle). Approximate height of lidded sugar 4.75", width 7.25" (handle to handle). Approximate height of creamer 4.62", width 5.37" (spout to handle). Approximate height of waste bowl 3.12", diameter 6.25". Approximate height of underplate 1.5", diameter 8.25". Approximate height of coffee cup 2.62", diameter 4.25". Approximate height of saucer 1.25", diameter 6.25". Approximate height of demitasse w/raised handle 3.12". Three demitasse with approximate height of 2.62" and seven with height of 2.5". Approximate height of two large saucers 1", diameter 6". Approximate height of saucers 1.12", diameter 5.37". Provenance: From the Private Collection of a South Carolina gentleman. Note: From 1805, during the Regency period, Spode introduced new techniques in ground-laying that resulted finely executed color on ceramics. This pattern is from that "First Spode Period" and can be seen in the Spode Museum Trust Heritage Centre, Elenora Street, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire ST4 1QQ.
