Continental School, early 20th century. "The Grand Canal", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Painting depicting the the Canal Grande in Venice, Italy as viewed from within the water with Piazza San Marco and St. Mark's Cathedral in view on right bank in background and many structures on the left bank, the waterway with many sailboats and gondolas to foreground, the entire scene set below heavily clouded, stormy skies with the sun setting at center in bright white and reflecting off the water. Unframed approximately 19.25" x 29".
Cracquelure throughout, however paint layer stable. Under black light examination, areas of retouches or in-painting on edges from losses occurring from rubbing on frame, scattered retouches throughout sky, horizon-line and water, minor retouches on boats. Minor losses on edge of work--not highly distracting. Oxidation to back of canvas commensurate with age. Three visible older patch repairs on back. No other signs of damage loss or repair. Work unframed.
