- Lot Description
Hampton & Sons (English, 1830-1960, circa early 19th century. A fine brass mounted black, polychrome and gilt japanned cabinet on stand, also known as a ‘collector’s cabinet’ having a rectangular top above a pair of hinged doors overall decorated with figures under arching pines above lake side pavilions, pagodas and rockwork flanked by distant mountains, within foliate arabesque and trelliswork borders all on an ebonized ground and mounted with engraved escutcheons and angle-clasps opening to reveal an arrangement of eleven variously sized drawers decorated with rural village scenes with people, pagodas, floral outcrops, birds, insects, flowers and precious objects, the sides decorated with foliage and raised on a fitted stand with foliate arabesque and trelliswork, the cabriole legs painted with four claw dragons and terminating on hairy ball and claw feet. A label to the underside for 'HAMPTON & SONS LTD DEPOSITORY', the name 'Morris' and number, indistinguishable. Approximate height 59.12", width 46", depth 20.5". Note: Hampton and Sons Ltd of Pall Mall East, Trafalgar Square London was established in 1830 in Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square by William Hampton, later being joined by his sons, George and William, the company moved to 8 Pall Mall East, adjacent to Trafalgar Square, in very large premises, trading as builders and surveyors, estate agents, ‘antique and modern furniture dealers’, general furnishers, upholsterers, plumbers and electricians. Their commissions included, inter alia, the furnishing of the Royal Yacht Britannia, the liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, the Theatre Royal in Drury lane, and the palaces of the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Maharajah of Kashmir. An incendiary bomb destroyed the building in 1940, after which they moved to Kensington High Street, where they traded until 1960.
Condition
Structurally sound and overall good condition. There is cracking and lifting on top as well as vertical shrinkage on both right and left sides of the cabinet with over-painting to stabilize the lifting; visible under ultraviolet light. Front left door with vertical shrinkage. Oxidation and some gilt loss to mounts. Drawer sides have been replaced (see image #5). Scattered chips with minor losses throughout commensurate with age and usage.
