English, early 19th century. A stained oak wood slant top secretary desk, the hinged slant top lid opening to rest on two oak supports with replaced pulls revealing an interior comprising of five central cubby holes decorated with overhead cyma curved molding surmounting an open storage compartment, flanked on each side by three rows of drawers with small replaced brass pulls, surmounting a drawer frame with 4 rows of cock-beaded drawers on dust boards, each drawer decorated with brass escutcheons, the desk back comprising of 5 oak boards, all resting on ogee molded feet. Approximate height 43.5", width 45", depth 20" (with slant front lid closed), depth 15.5" (with slant front lid open). Slant front lid retains its original key. Slant top lid exhibits surface abrasions and a few slight dark stains, writing surface of top exhibits a swath of black staining starting beneath interior storage compartment and continuing beneath rightmost small drawer and onto board of writing surface likely from old ink, drawer boards exhibit separation between boards, third drawer exhibits black mark on board (old stain), right side exhibits dark lines near slant top, drawer facades also have slight abrasions and dark marks, leftmost side of drawer fronts exhibit surface fractures, likely from humid climate conditions, feet exhibit slight abrasions commensurate with age. Desk structurally stable.
