Edward Benjamin Herberte (1857-1893). "Fox Hunt" - 1881, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right "E.B. Herbert". Painting depicts four distinguished Englishmen on horseback following a dog engaged in fox hunting. One of the riders is being thrown to the ground as his horse trips and falls over a fence that the group is jumping. Label on verso from Sotheby's New York, an old gallery or museum label, and a torn label with biographical information on the artist. Framed 21.25" x 25", unframed 14.25" x 18.25".
Painting has been relined. Under black light examination, two horizontal areas of inpainting surrounding man in top hat's head, likely from lateral tears (running approximately 2.1" and 0.5"). Clouds with signs of retouches under black light. Craquelure commensurate with age however paint layer stable. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
