John Van Koert (Canadian/American, 1912-1998) for Drexel Furniture Company (American, North Carolina). Drexel Profile walnut and glass buffet with deck or china cabinet, circa 1950s, the deck with sliding glass doors, the interior with 2 shelves with frosted glass insert, the shelves and base of deck with grooves for displaying plates. The buffet below hosts two central drawers, the top drawer fitted for flatware, flanked to each side by a hinged cupboard door over a long drawer. Drexel Profile tag to the interior top drawer of the buffet. The back side of the deck is stamped with model number K35 - 4A and dated 9/57. Approximate height 72", width 60", depth 21".
Note: This piece is documented in the 1960 catalog "Profile by Drexel" on page 8 (K37 Buffet) and page 10 (K35 Deck). The Drexel Profile furniture collection was designed by John Van Koert, and it was in production from 1955 to 1961. Van Koert started out as a jewelry designer for Harry Winston after WWII and later branched into industrial design. He also is well known for designing silver for Towle, particularly the Contour design; his particular attention to the drawer pulls and other hardware on Profile pieces is noted in the catalog.
