Donald Wells (English, 1929-2014), "Auto Rhythmic"-1968, aluminum sculpture, inscribed and numbered "WELLS 68 1/1" on bottom. Modern abstract geometric sculpture composed of stacked, disjointed ovoidal forms with triangular piercing at center with semi-circle piercing at base; with separable dark wood base. Note: Wells studied at Newcastle-under-Lyme School of Art, where he studied under Jack Clarkson, an associate of Henry Moore. With base approximate height 7.5", width 6", depth 3". Provenance: Marjorie Parr Gallery, London, whereby acquired by the Estate of Joseph Gilbert of Atlanta, Georgia on 5/23/70. Copy of purchase receipt available upon request.
Scattered pitting and surface scratches throughout. Two thin bands of abrasion to sides of ovidal forms consistent with possible contact with base. Minor chips to edges, not distracting. Several minor circular areas of discoloration commensurate with minor oxidation (visible in image 5). Base with minor surface scratches commensurate with use and handling. Base underside with four felt pads.
